The Concept

For this work, I decided I want to create an opportunity for my cast members and myself to explore this concept of mental, emotional, and physical “breaking points” in depth. I am interested in how we as individuals are capable of so much more than we believe we are. What happens if we continue to push ourselves past the point in which we think we can go? I have decide to have four layers to my process: teaching choreography, generating choreography, training, and reflection. For teaching choreography, I create material which is challenging for me and explores different concepts of weight, momentum, and drive. Then, I teach these phrases to my dancers for them to execute. For generating choreography, I give my dancers different tasks that ask them to generate choreography either in small groups of individually. This is a way for my dancers to be involved in the process and bring their unique challenges and experiences to the process. Training is a way to physically push my dancers and attempt to elicit a certain quality in their movement. Reflection will help my dancers and me incorporate the mental and emotional component into the choreography.
